The US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has supported crypto entrepreneur Do Kwon’s call for his criminal trial to commence only after his extradition. Kwon, founder of the Terra blockchain protocol, is currently under investigation for the alleged violation of US securities laws.
Mr. Kwon requested the postponement, suggesting it would be unfair to start his trial prior to his extradition as he would not be able to defend himself adequately. The SEC, in an unexpected move, supported this course of action, noting that Kwon’s rights should indeed be upheld.
Nonetheless, the US regulator still awaits a response from the court. If approved, the case of Kwon will serve as a precedent for other crypto industry individuals facing similar charges, demonstrating that they have rights even in overseas proceedings.
